FC042 (JAN 2014) ASSIGNMENT GUIDELINES FOR STUDENTS

General information:
·         This assignment is worth 60% of your overall mark for this module
·         You are required to write an essay
  • Your essay should be 1500 words in length
  • The aim of the assignment is to test your knowledge and understanding of key theories/concepts and your ability to apply these theories/concepts to a specific organisational context
  • The deadline is Thursday 01 May 2014 before 4pm (work submitted after this date will be subject to GIC rules and penalties)
  • Two printed copies of the assignment must be submitted to Student Services with a completed and signed submission form
  • An electronic copy should be submitted via Turnitin
  • Two further guidance documents, a) Assignment Frequently Asked Questions and b) GIC Referencing Guidelines, are available on moodle
Essay question:
Drawing on an organisation of your choice, discuss the benefits and drawbacks of group and team working for organisations.

Guidelines for writing your essay:
  1. Focus and engagement with question: You must ensure that you answer the task that has been set: discussing the benefits and drawbacks of group/team working within a specific organisational context.  Remain within the word limit which is set to test whether you can write concisely about all the key issues without rambling off topic.
2.   Explanation of key theories/concepts:  You have been asked to discuss the potential benefits and drawbacks of group and team working.  Key theories/concepts about group/team working must be used throughout your essay to support your arguments.
3.   Application of theories/concepts to practice: You have been asked to draw on an organisation of your choice.  A case example must be used to support your arguments.  This requires you:
a.    To identify a relevant case example (organisation) and explain the ways in which groups and/or teams are used there.
b.    To explain any benefits to the organisation resulting from group and/or team working.
c.    To explain any drawbacks to the organisation of group and/or team working and how the organisation has/could overcome these.
Case examples can be found within a range of references including books and journals. 
4.   Essay structure and academic written style: Your essay must be structured logically and written coherently in an academic style.
5.   Referencing from a range of sources applying GIC referencing guidelines: see below.
Recommended reading and referencing:
Lectures and seminars 7 and 8 will cover basic theories/concepts and is a useful starting point.  You should additionally read as widely as possible, drawing on different types of references including books and journals.
Recommended books are listed in order of relevance (in particular, refer to relevant chapters on groups/teams):-

Think carefully about the additional sources you use for your assignment.  Draw primarily from academic sources include books, journals and e-journals.  Such academic sources have been peer-reviewed which means that experts in the field have reviewed and agreed that the ideas are reasonable and accurate. Websites such as Wikipedia are not peer reviewed and do not represent an academic sour
ce.  Relevant journals are listed within the FC042 Module Guide, posted on moodle.  Assignments which have drawn on limited or poor quality sources will be penalised. 
You should provide a list of references at the end of your assignment.  List all books, journals and other sources to which you have referred in your essay.  References in your list must have a corresponding reference within your essay.  You should rely on GIC referencing guidelines, posted on moodle.  Your list should be in alphabetical order by author.  A book reference should provide details of the author’s/authors’ surname(s), first name(s), date of publication, title of book, place and publisher.  Refer to the GIC Referencing Guidelines to find out how to reference other sources including journals and webpages.  Poorly referenced work will be penalised.
You should not copy text from a book, another person’s work or internet sites and imply that it is your own work.  This is known as plagiarism and is an academic offence. Plagiarism is the word academics use for copying. If you are quoting directly from a book, you should indicate so by using quotation marks (for example: Wilson (2014: 1) explains, “Work, people and employment structure our lives”.) You should avoid excessive use of quotes as the assignment must demonstrate your understanding – and not simply be a collection of quotes!
Generic submission guidelines:
1.   Use a standard academic font, size 12 and use 1.5 spacing between lines.
2.   Each page of your assignment should have a header with your student ID number, module code (FC042) and the name of your seminar tutor (Moira Nikodem, Nikki O’Brien, Jeff Meadowcroft or Josephine Adekola).  Do not include your name in the header.
3.   All pages should be numbered.
4.   Staple all pages together. 
5.   Include a title page consisting of the following information:
·   Module Code (FC042 Jan 14)
·   Class/Group: (e.g. Group 1, Group 2, Group 3 or Group 4)
·   Module Title (Fundamentals of Organisational Behaviour)
·   Assessment Title (Essay)
·   Assignment Title: (add the title of your essay)
·   Tutor Name: (name of your seminar tutor)
·   Student ID Number: (add your ID number only and not your name)
·   Date of Submission: (due on Thursday 01 May 2014 before 4pm)
Penalties:
You may be penalized according to the GIC Assessment Rules in the following situations. 
·         You submit coursework that is above or below the stated word limit by more than 20%.  The mark awarded for this assignment shall be capped at 50% if the submission exceeds or falls short of the required word length by more than twenty percent but less than fifty percent. If the word length is exceeded or missed by more than fifty percent, it shall be capped at 40%. To calculate specific word length, all text in reference lists and appendices should be excluded. You mustinclude a word count at the end of your assignment.
·         You hand in your assignment later than the stated deadline. You must submit work for assessment by the stated deadline.  If you do not, the following penalties for written work will apply: (Unless there are valid reasons for the lateness (e.g. illness) and this is supported with an EEC form and evidence).

Please note that the following examples of collusion are considered as academic misconduct and, in the absence of hard evidence, you may be asked to attend a meeting to discuss
your understanding of the work. If you do not attend such a meeting, tutors may use academic judgement to determine whether or not an offence has taken place. Collusion examples include a situation where a student:
·         intentionally submits as entirely his or her own work, an essay or report written by another person.
·         permits another candidate to copy all or part of their own work, knowing it is to be submitted as that other candidate’s own work;
·         allows another person to re-write large sections of the students’ work.
Submission deadline and procedure:
·         Submit TWO printed copies of your assignment to Student Services with one completed front cover sheet by Thursday 01 May 2014 before 4pm.  When you hand your work in, please ensure that all the pages are stapled together in the correct order and that pages are numbered.  You should keep a copy of your work, as the copies you submit will be retained.
·         Submit an electronic version of your assignment to Turnitin on the same day.  This MUST be identical to the paper submission or there will be 25% deduction from the final assignment score.  
You will be required to enter various codes.  These are related to your seminar group number.  You are in group 1 if Moira is your tutor, Group 2 if Nikki is your tutor, Group 3 if Jeff is your tutor and group 4 if Josephine is your tutor. Codes are as follows:

Students must submit to Turnitin no more than 1 working day after the hand-in deadline for the paper copy. Failure to submit through Turnitin will also result in penalties.  10% will be deducted from your mark if your electronic version is submitted more than one day late.  If it is submitted more than five working days late (usually the following Friday at 4.00 pm) you will receive a mark of ZERO for this assignment.
Students are required to report any technical difficulties to the class tutor and to send an e-copy direct to the class tutor if necessary.

Marking scheme:

The marking scheme in the UK may be different from what you are familiar with in your home countries. The pass mark for this assignment is equivalent to 40%. This means that you have just succeeded in meeting the criteria set out earlier in this handout. An ‘average’ mark is equivalent to 50-55%.  A good mark is equivalent to 60% and above, with marks equivalent to over 70% being deemed of excellent quality. Do not expect to get mark equivalent to 90-100% as a matter of course. Scores such as these would be for work of the most exceptional quality.
