Physical Geography

Paper instructions:
In the past few weeks we have moved from the study of weather and climatology, to the study of geomorpholgy, and the study of the formation of the landscapes that exist everywhere. These are shaped by both internal and external factors forming the current landscape.

I would like you to write a report on the geomorphology around areas where you live, or areas you have visited. Try to give four or five different examples and explain what shaped the landscape – internal or external factors, and for external shaping what was the predominant force (wind, river, ocean etc.). Also indicate whether aggradation or degradation was dominant.

PLEASE USE MT. ST. HELENS, CRATER LAKE, MT. RAINIER, MOHAVE DESERT AND NORTH UMPQUA RIVER AS EXAMPLES

This assignment is somewhat free-form but I want you to begin thinking critically and using what you have learned, applying it to analyze the world around you. Use headings to identify what geomorphological process you are discussing, explain where it i,s as well as how you believe it was formed. Remember that since you will not neccessarily have potographs to include in your text so you will have to write a description that allows me to form a mental picture of the landscape. Around 1000 words.

I hope that you enjoy this assignment!

All questions you want to be asking yourself whilst addressing the four spheres of the physical environment: The lithosphere (soil, ground, plateaus, mountains, floodplains, etc…) The biosphere (vegetation, wildlife, tree canopy, grasslands, crops (planted or natural), especially human activity, etc…) The atmosphere (wind patterns, weather and climate, dry season, wet season, weather driven natural disasters such as tornados – monsoons – hurricanes – sand storms (and how do these affect human activity?), etc… The hydrosphere (where is the water, how is it used, is there enough, irrigation, precipitation, dry season, wet season, rivers (and how do these affect human activity?)
